The medieval fortress of Koules is one of the most important trademarks of Heraklion. Guests can admire it at the beginning of the western breakwater of the port of Heraklion. The name Koules means fortress in Turkish and was constructed by the Venetians in the early 13th century when the Venetians conquered the town.
Although the main purpose of the Fortress was to store food and military supplies, it served as a prison for some period of time. After years of restoration, the Fortress is open to the public again and it serves as a museum. Also, the visitors can take a romantic walk on the port and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
